Well, not what I like but what my clients like.

The skin smoothing feature is what I like. It is turning out to be my secret weapon.Īt first I was 'horrified' that the default settings actually changed the bone structure of the subject's face! But then I realized that you can turn that off or just turn it waaay down. So I finally bought PP10 a few weeks ago. However, in my portrait work I was spending way too much time on the computer trying to fix faces. I too like to see the texture on the skin. I'd have to agree with you on these points, Duncan. I agree with some of your points but you lost me when you claim there is a difference between touching up zits and doing other types of beauty editing. I understand that I'm swimming against the tide here, but I still feel a need to speak out. Nobody wants to see skin eruptions in their portraits, but when we start doing plastic surgery by post-processing on every image the public sees, something is very, very wrong. All these things are part of what makes a person's face unique. I like slight irregularities in people's faces. And those models have tooth veneers, plastic surgery, breast implants, etc, etc. The next step is for people (especially women, since our culture puts so much emphasis on the importance of appearance for women) to feel inadequate because they don't look like the cover of a fashion magazine, when the truth is that NOBODY looks like that, not even the models on those covers. It creates a sick, distorted fantasy ideal of beauty that doesn't really exist. I personally despise this sort of editing, and deeply resent the way it's over-used, especially by the fashion and advertising industries. It's handy for someone like me who would rather concentrate on taking photos rather than spending hours on PS. You can extend the area which is retouched to include the neck and the rest of the body but I didn't do that here. Still, you can see in the pixel level view below that it has managed to reduce pores and blemishes as well as accentuate the eyes and lips will minimal input from me. Admittedly she doesn't need too much help :-).

There is a lot of adjustability and you are free to use as little retouching as you want. About 5 mins later, I got the result on the right from PP10 with only minor tweaks to the default settings.

A lot of the mundane spotting work can be done by PP10 and you can finalise editing in PS afterwards. It won't replace PS but it works as a complement. I find PP10 a quick and easy way of doing blemish removal and enhancing features without having to learn too much PS. I use my normal RAW processor to export a 16bit TIFF for working in PP10. Portrait Professional 10 can speed up retouching portraits, especially softening skin, but are there disadvantages or limitations in using this sofware? The Studio edition around $ 70, is necessary for raw files.
